Carriacou Museum

From the building it sits in to the many important Amerindian artifacts it preserves, the Carriacou Museum is a treasure trove, preserving the history and deep traditions of the people who lived on the island centuries ago. Located on Paterson Street in Hillsborough, the museum founded in 1976 is presently housed in a restored cotton ginnery (the second oldest in the world) which ceased operating in 1979.As well as Amerindian artifacts, there are exhibits tracing the early British and French occupation of the islands along with a section based entirely on the African influence on the island such as big drum. On a tour of the museum you can see historic documents, furniture, glassware, and pottery etc. Be sure to see the display upstairs dedicated to local artist, Canute Caliste, who died in 2005.
